The Local Government Association have warned councils to think twice before rushing to set up municipal banks. The report follows announcements by Birmingham City Council and Essex County Council that they were considering setting up banks. The LGA warns 'banking is a complex and risky business' and that ‘new initiatives need to be well researched'.
