CHALLENGING THE CONVENTIAL WISDOM ON EMPOWERMENT The Urban Forum Lecture 2008 22nd
January 2008 London
Despite empowerment rising up the political agenda, there remain fundamental tensions at the heart of our political institutions. As inequalities between the richest and poorest in society continue to widen, citizens in English-speaking nations are now twice as likely as their European counterparts to suffer mental illness. Can we shake ourselves from this Affluenza and return to the ideals of egalitarianism and democracy that can truly empower? The lecture was given by the distinguished author, broadcaster and psychologist Oliver James. One of the most insightful and free-thinking writers of our time, Oliver has been described as being 'guaranteed to make you think more deeply than ever'. He provided ‘blue skies thinking' to Jack Straw whilst he was Home Secretary and now performs a similar role for the Conservative Party. THE EMPOWERMENT GAME – CHANCE OR COMMUNITY CHEST? Urban Forum Annual Conference 2007 3rd-4th December 2007 Hilton Leeds City This year's conference tackled issues of neighbourhoods and local governance, diversity, equalities and cohesion, and laces and built environment. Stream One Booklet: Influencing Descisions Stream Two Booklet: Equalities and Cohesion Stream Three Booklet: Places and Bases The Empowerment Game First Results At the conference, young people from Community Radio East Leeds were interviewing delegates for podcast. If you want to listen to the podcasts you can find them HERE. You'll also be able to find out more about the ELFM project and, when you've listened, give some feedback – the young people like to know what people think. WHERE ARE THE WOMEN IN LSPs ? IMPORTANT NOTICE URBAN FORUM CONFERENCES As a national organisation Urban Forum aims to hold
conferences and seminars throughout the country, with the ambition of scheduling
at least on event in each of the English regions per year. This not only allows
potential delegates to live in the vicinity of at least one event during a
12-month period but also to have the opportunity to see and hear of the experiences
of others with a shared interest in other regions. |
