CHALLENGING THE CONVENTIAL WISDOM ON EMPOWERMENT

The Urban Forum Lecture 2008

22nd January 2008 London

Despite empowerment rising up the political agenda, there remain fundamental tensions at the heart of our political institutions.  As inequalities between the richest and poorest in society continue to widen, citizens in English-speaking nations are now twice as likely as their European counterparts to suffer mental illness.  Can we shake ourselves from this Affluenza and return to the ideals of egalitarianism and democracy that can truly empower?

The lecture was given by the distinguished author, broadcaster and psychologist Oliver James.  One of the most insightful and free-thinking writers of our time, Oliver has been described as being 'guaranteed to make you think more deeply than ever'. He provided ‘blue skies thinking' to Jack Straw whilst he was Home Secretary and now performs a similar role for the Conservative Party.

Urban Forum Policy Forum on Community Cohesion

February-March 2007

As one way of involving Urban Forum members more directly in influencing policy we are setting up Policy Forums.  These will bring together small groups of members to focus on a specific area of policy that has a direct effect on the communities they live in and work with. They will provide an opportunity to:
1. Develop ideas and gather evidence for policy change
2. Present these ideas directly to policy makers (e.g. MPs, civil servants)

Following research conducted at Urban Forum's Annual Conference in December we decided to focus our first Policy Forum on Community Cohesion. Urban Forum's Chair, Ed Cox, was a member of the Commission on Integration and Cohesion and this gave our members an excellent opportunity to feed directly into their work.

For more information on the Commission on Integration and Cohesion go to the DCLG website.

Please see the Policy Forum Information Sheet for more details.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

URBAN FORUM CONFERENCES

As a national organisation Urban Forum aims to hold conferences and seminars throughout the country, with the ambition of scheduling at least on event in each of the English regions per year. This not only allows potential delegates to live in the vicinity of at least one event during a 12-month period but also to have the opportunity to see and hear of the experiences of others with a shared interest in other regions.
Major conferences in particular will move around the country but the venues chosen for these will, inevitably, be dictated by cost and the facilities available. At times, and in order to visit an area not previously used for a conference, some compromises have to be made. However, all venues chosen for conferences will be fully accessible.
Urban Forum will attempt to make its events as affordable as possible, in particular to delegates from local voluntary and community organisations.
BOOKING RULES
Once a place is confirmed at an Urban Forum event this consititutes a contract between the individual or organisation placing the booking and Urban Forum. The individual or organisation is then liable to pay the full amount, as listed any relevant invoice, unless Urban Forum receives notice of cancellation up to 15 days before the start of the event. 50 per cent of the original amount will be liable for cancellations received up to 8 days before the event, and the full amount thereafter.
Every effort will be made to help individuals or organisations with restricted income but this will depend on the nature of the commitment Urban Forum has to make to the venue.
