Involving a Socially and Economically Excluded Community in Brighton and Hove City Council’s Boundary

This case study is based on interviews with Neighbourhood Support Team Officer from Brighton and Hove City Council and a community representative from the Tarner Partnership.

The Tarner and Eastern Road areas were identified by Brighton and Hove City Council as concentrated pockets of deprivation, and significant work involving local people has been carried out in both of these areas to improve the quality of life for residents. Before this work started there were limited engagement opportunities for residents. Extensive outreach work was carried out, supported by Neighbourhood Renewal Funding.

The Tarner and Eastern Road Partnerships were then established, as two of a number of partnerships between different public agencies and residents set up to address different local issues. The results of this work includes: improvements in the physical appearance of the local areas, lower crime rates and improved local schools.
